Recorder Ensemble Rocks the Opera House!

The Merimbula Public School Recorder Ensemble represented their school and community on Wednesday August 28, performing in an evening concert at the Sydney Opera House for the Festival of Instrumental Music. Nine students from the school performed: Year 6 students Nell, Annabel and Makenzee; Year 5 students Paris and Lily; and Liliana, Charlotte, Arabella and Lousie from Year 4.

"They have been practicing the repertoire for the concert at lunchtime, 4 days a week since early Term 1" shared Teacher and Recorder Tutor Mr Claxton. "They played three pieces on the night including a traditional Jamaican piece called ‘Mango Walk', along with ‘Galliard Irregular' and a James Bond themed composition called ‘Rocky Hammond Private Investigator' ". The pieces were written exclusively for the concert.

Parents, caregivers and guests were very impressed with the performance. "The concert brought me to tears it was so amazing" shared parent Mrs Tarpey "I cheered 'go Merimbula' at the end".

The commitment of the students and dedication to the program has been exceptional all year. "Each of the students are outstanding role models for our school" shared Mr Claxton.

This ensemble was the fourth Mr Claxton has taken to the Festival Of Instrumental Music from Merimbula Public School, since commencing at the school in 2010. Mr Claxton has also coordinated the school's band, Music Extravaganza night, a hip-hop group for boys and other music tutorial groups at the school, as well as the Sapphire Coast Learning Community's Music Camp for 3 years. He looks forward to expanding the school's performing arts programs in the new year.
