Aurora College

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

Partnered with Aurora College, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Aurora College offers the following four specialist programs, including three selective programs for high potential and gifted students and a comprehensive Stage 6 program to broaden curriculum options for Senior students from rural, regional and remote NSW

Entry to the Aurora College Selective High School and Opportunity Class is run by the NSW Department of Education's Selective Education Team - it is a highly competitive process. Successful students operate in a dual enrolment with Aurora College and their local school. Students benefit from learning with like minded peers, an academically rigorous fast paced, enriched program that promoted deep understanding, critical and creative thinking and application to the real world.

The Young and Deadly Mob is a specialised offering for high potential and gifted Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from rural, regional and remote parts of NSW. Students are supported and challenged to reach their learning potential while remaining connected to local Community, Culture and school. The program also focuses on deepening engagement, increasing retention and building community partnerships.

What does the Aurora College Opportunity Class look like at Merimbula Public School?

Aurora college provides a mix of online and residential school classes. Students connect with their teachers and classmates in timetabled lessons through a virtual learning environment, which comprises web conferencing software, a learning management system, and a range of cutting-edge online communication and collaboration tools. The school also operates one of the state’s first fully digital school libraries. Students are also invited to attend a camp each year, with their online peers. This is coordinated and supervised by Aurora College.

These students will be studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) virtually in Year 5 or Year 6 (depending on their current academic grade), four days a week for two hours (approximately), whilst completing: English; Conceptual Units (Geography, History); Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, Sport and Creative and Performing Arts, with their peers at Merimbula Public School.

More Information on Enrolment

Parents normally apply when students are in Year 3 or 4. Students who are placed within the classes, or the Aurora College virtual school that Merimbula Public School is partnered with, then attend the opportunity class full time in Years 5 and 6 at the primary school with an opportunity class. It is a two-year placement program.

Placement in the Aurora College Opportunity Class allows students to access a challenging academic program without the need to leave our school. To see if Aurora College is right for your child, or to begin your journey with Aurora College, view the links below.
